Warming winter fare by the fire at The Punter in Oxford

Oxford is a city of many watering holes and since moving here two years ago I’ve sampled many of them. That said, it’s always a pleasure to discover a new favourite, especially in the middle of winter.

Located by the river in the beautiful waterside community of Osney, The Punter makes a perfect pit stop on a weekend stroll. The staff are friendly and welcoming (to dogs too) while the interior is suitably cosy and quirky; think roaring fire, rustic tables, an eclectic mix of seating and paintings lining the walls.

The seasonal menu changes daily, a celebration of classic British fare. The homemade scotch eggs and piccalilli have quite a reputation, but I visited on a cold winter’s day so opted for sausages and mash followed by a bread and butter pudding. All delicious!

I settled in and stayed for a happy few hours with friends before venturing back into the rain. I’m looking forward to returning in the summer and watching the narrow boats pass by on the river.
